Microsystem Acupuncture for Degenerative Eye Disease
Microsystem Acupuncture for vision loss is an integrative treatment form that utilizes a selection of Acupuncture points from various Acupuncture systems with maximum effect on the eyes. Most of the Microacupuncture points are located in the hands and feet. No needles are placed in or near the eye. Since it’s origin in Denmark in the 1980’s this treatment form has spread throughout both Europe and the US and countless patients have benefited from the procedure. When treated by a well trained practitioner over 85% of patients experience a marked improvement in their vision and/or a slowing/stopping of the progression of their disease.
The Microsystem Acupuncture points particularly support the eyes and brain by stimulating blood and Qi flow (and hereby increasing oxygen and nutrient circulation) to the retina, optic nerve and visual system. Additional attention is given to the liver and kidneys as the main detoxification organs. Very commonly, having these needles induces a state of deep relaxation.
Dr. Gunnar Hansen practiced in a German clinic for 7 years with Dr. Hans-Peter Wutta, the German pioneer in treating patients for degenerative eye disease with this procedure. In an independent study of 106 of their patients with Macular Degeneration (wet and dry) 86% experienced significant improvement in their vision and/or the arrest of this otherwise degenerative condition.
The following conditions have been successfully treated:
- Macular Degeneration (AMD, wet & dry)
- Retinitis Pigmentosa (RP)
- Open Angle Glaucoma
- Diabetic Retinopathy
- Vision loss due to traumatic injury or stroke
- Stargardt Macular Dystrophy
- Optic Nerve Atrophy
In many cases other degenerative diseases of the eye or visual system have responded to Microsystem Acupuncture as well. We encourage you to contact Dr. Hansen for an individual opinion.

- Initial Acupuncture treatment
Depending on the individual patient additional tests or therapies may be suggested, eg.

- Photobiomodulation
- Electroacupuncture
- Ear Acupuncture
- Herbs and/or Homeopathy
- Supplements
- Eye exercises
- Craniosacral therapy
Acupuncture Protocol
After the initial consultation, most patients are scheduled for a 10-day protocol over a two-week period and will receive 2 – 3 acupuncture treatments a day. The individual treatment duration is about 30 min and may include Microsystem Acupuncture, Photobiomodulation, Electroacupuncture and Ear Acupuncture. There is a one-hour break between treatments. Depending on your schedule you will spend 2 – 3 ½ hours a day at or close to the clinic.
We will assess your vision before, during and after the procedure. A series of vision tests (acuity chart near and far, contrast, colour vision and Amsler grid) will be used to establish a baseline and monitor your progress. Some patients will see improvement from treatment to treatment while for others it will take a longer time. The actual number of visits needed may vary depending on the severity of the disease, the length of time it has existed, and your overall health. Over 85% of patients respond positively within the initial 20 session treatment period.
Creating Lasting Results
New patients have to understand that our treatment program does not offer a quick fix or miracle cure for everybody. The success of the treatment is supported by your ongoing commitment to your health and well-being. Stress, additional health conditions, nutrition, medication and lifestyle all affect your individual aging process and the effectiveness of the treatment. At Vision Acupuncture we will provide you with valuable information on diet, lifestyle and relevant eye care routines to further the success of your Acupuncture treatment and ensure its longevity.
Degenerative eye disease gets worse if neglected and, as a general rule, will need ongoing treatment. Most patients will return two or three times a year for 3-5 day refresher treatments to maintain their eye health. Depending on the individual case longer visits and/or shorter intervals may be necessary. After the initial recovery of whatever lost vision is possible the healing process will slow down but continue. During this phase many patients will gain new insight into the causes of their condition. With the appropriate lifestyle changes you can expect to see stabilization of your eye condition and significant improvement in your overall health, vitality and well-being.
